Sam! You sly dog. I've been trying to figure out where you went.

Seems my password for the server no longer works, and I'm interested in working on LIPP again (as soon as I get my hands on the Medieval Market that's sold out all over the place).

Can you help a brotha out?

I'm sure Sam knows this already, but whatever he does decide to do with vac, i'll support regardless. (Just in case my previous post didn't leave that feeling)

Well. Let me just interject that I feel entirely befuddled.

The only part I got was "vis.nu needs cash".

Happily, that's the only part I could help with! I love it when a plan comes together!

Sam, you know my timing on that. Early October is best. But we'll talk.

Sam, I'll support whatever decision that you make. I'll happily make a donation, though. Currently, all I really use vis.nu for is email, which I access via SSH and PINE from work ('cos the web server is always horrendously lagged or outright not working) and via MAIL from home. Yeah, I'm boring.

I'm definitely for the vis.nu fund. However I think it should be spent on quality hardware, thats new, probably supported and will last for quite a while, rather than a pretty good used server that may or may not last (such as the current server). I'm going to be very open about this. I LIVE on vac. I use it more than any other server in my home. It runs all my things I use. IRC. Telnet. Mail. My website. Sam has even been playing with having remote X sessions which would be pretty damn awesome. And the things i'd like to use it for, Sam and I are on the same page about it, so i'm not feeling like i'm taking advantage of a great system he has. He wants to do the things I want to do. So, I'm willing to invest a lot into getting a better system. I know Sam doesn't have a lot to spend for a new machine, and to be honest, he keeps the system running, so why should he spend a lot. Yes its his, i understand his feelings about that. Doesn't want to ask for money because its his thing. Hes just letting us play in his sandbox. I want it to be clear that I dont want him to feel obligated to me because it goes down. Its his thing. I'm just paying him back for letting me use it.

So what do I think it should run? I'd love it to be on an Xserve. Intel or PowerPC. As a mac user, having an xserve would be pretty damn slick to play with. But since that may not be a possibility, I definitely think that if a new server can run OpenBSD without these problems, it should be OpenBSD. Otherwise? FreeBSD.

There is not a good linux distro that would let vis.nu do the things it does today unless we wanted to compile everything from source by hand. And I mean everything. The only one i'd want to use it Gentoo, and it is frequently behind in software versions, which is why I abandoned it for FreeBSD long ago.

So why FreeBSD? Its pretty secure, its fast, and it has the ports. That ports tree is NEVER out of date. Anything we want we can get, and its the latest. And keeping the ports up to date is a snap, because the tree has an excellent upgrading tool to keep it up to date for you. PLUS, we still get cool things like PF.

I know sam, that you're not as familiar with FreeBSD, but trust me, you'll pick it up quick. Its not that much different than OpenBSD. It does a few things differently, especially with the ports, but other than that, they're pretty similar.
